Biogas – The energy for future generations
- 19th Annual Conference of the German Biogas Association and Biogas Trade Fair in Leipzig on rotation
- More exhibitors and preregistered conference participants than ever
From 2–4 February 2010, Leipzig is the European capital of the biogas industry. More than 3,000 visitors are expected to source information about current developments and the latest products and services during the three days of the Annual Conference of the German Biogas Association and the accompanying exhibition. Besides the lectures in the plenary sessions and workshops, interested visitors can make a study tour of biogas plants in the Leipzig region and take part in the parallel event “Biogas for Municipalities”. With a record number of more than 280 exhibiting companies and almost 1,100 preregistered conference participants, the event promises to be a complete success again.
The biogas industry enters 2010 with confidence. Following some 500 new plants last year, the first upward trend for plant manufacturers since 2006, the German Biogas Association assumes that Germany will top the 5,000 plants mark this year. With a total output of some 1,650 megawatts, the existing 4,500 biogas plants cover the annual electricity needs of 3.8 million average households. “On the one hand, small plants up to 190 kW are experiencing a renaissance due to the slurry bonus, and on the other megawatt plants are being built that inject their processed biomethane direct into the natural gas grid,” says Josef Pellmeyer, President of the German Biogas Association.
The use of biogas to provide energy is a good alternative, particularly for agriculture. More than 90 per cent of the biogas plants in Germany operate with agricultural substrates. Clemens Neumann, Head of Renewable Raw Materials Section, Federal Ministry for Food, Agriculture and Consumer Protection, will therefore address the annual conference on “Prospects for the use of biogas for agricultural production in Germany” – at 6 p.m. on 3 February.
Attractive four-day programme
The Biogas exhibition has grown again this year. A record number of over 280 exhibitors present their latest products and services. The exhibition in 2010 covers the segments of planning and manufacture of biogas plants and plant components, renewable raw materials, services and information. “We and the German Biogas Association are delighted with the noticeable growth in the number of exhibitors,” says Claudia Reindl, Exhibition Director at NürnbergMesse. “This shows once again that the exhibition has become a permanent event in the exhibition calendar of many companies.”
Visitors can also update on many new developments in the lecture halls and at the plenary sessions. The latest findings are presented and discussed in 23 plenary sessions and eleven workshops. The conference blocks of the plenary sessions are: Biogas Plant Technology, Sustainability, Improving Efficiency, Amended Renewable Energy Act, Substrate Production and Trends in Plant Management. The topics at the workshops range from “Legal requirements for recycling fermentation products” to “Successful communication and public relations”. Gas injection as a focus at the 19th Annual Conference is dealt with in many blocks of lectures. One highlight of the annual conference is the panel discussion on the second day of the event at 11.30 a.m. This is presented by Jörg Mayer from the German Renewable Energy Agency. After the opening lecture by Dr. Martin Altrock, from Lawyers Becker Büttner Held, representatives of the five parliamentary party groups join the panel for discussions with Prof. Dr. Martin Maslaton, Dietmar Schütz and Josef Pellmeyer. All plenary lectures will be translated simultaneously into English due to the great international interest in the use of biogas in Germany.
Biogas for municipalities
A special highlight is the “Biogas for Municipalities” series, which now takes place for the second time in succession. This event at 2 p.m. on 3 February covers the most important points in the implementation of renewable energy projects. The first part deals more with the legal and organizational aspects and the second half of the parallel event covers examples of best practice. These include the villages of Merkendorf, Wildpoldsried – Climate Protection Community 2009 – and the bioenergy villages in the Göttinger Land region. The focus is also on practical aspects on Friday, 5 February, when the biogas study tours of selected plants in the Leipzig region take place after the annual conference. Three different tours are offered this year: Tour 1 focuses on waste treatment plants, Tour 2 on renewable raw material plants, and Tour 3 with explanations in English is specially for international visitors.
The whole programme for the 19th Annual Conference is now available for downloading.
